What are the advantages of common magnets in permanent magnet motors?

May 29, 2024

Permanent magnet motors are used in a wide range of applications, covering many fields such as industry, transportation, household appliances, new energy vehicles, and the aerospace industry. In permanent magnet motors, some common magnet types include neodymium iron boron, samarium cobalt, ferrite, alnico, etc. Each of them has different features and advantages:

Neodymium magnet (NdFeB) is currently the most widely used permanent magnet and the most powerful commercial magnet. They are famous for their high magnetic energy product, high coercivity and good magnetic stability. They are also known as Strong magnet. NdFeB magnetic material has strong magnetic force but is lightweight. It is suitable for application scenarios that require high efficiency and compact design. This precisely makes permanent magnet motors smaller in size, lighter in weight, and cost-effective.

Samarium cobalt magnet (SmCo) has a high magnetic energy product and good high-temperature resistance. It is suitable for applications in high-temperature environments, so it is more suitable for motors. Compared with neodymium magnets, they have higher coercivity and magnetic stability. However, the disadvantage of samarium cobalt magnets is that they are expensive and are generally used in motors in high-tech fields such as aerospace and military.

Ferrite magnet (Ferrite) has the advantages of not being easily oxidized, high Curie temperature, and low cost. It is generally suitable for permanent magnet motors with medium or low-end requirements.Although its size is larger and its magnetic properties are not as good as those of neodymium iron boron and samarium cobalt, it is still one of the common magnets in permanent magnet motors.

Alnico magnet (AlNiCo) has the advantages of excellent temperature stability, time stability and suitable for ultra-high temperature selection environmental conditions. It is generally suitable for applications in fields with high temperature requirements and high magnetic stability, such as military, instrumentation, etc.

The selection of these magnets in a permanent magnet motor depends on the specific application requirements and has a significant impact on the overall performance of the motor and project cost, so the appropriate magnets need to be selected based on specific application requirements and cost considerations when designing the motor.
